The project aims at awaking the students’ thirst for learning about their roots, processes which shaped their national characters thus understanding other cultures as well as enhancing the knowledge of foreign languages. We have been observing a sad tendency on the side of the students of being passive in the process of learning. Unfortunately, it is mostly the teachers who shape the process of learning. As a result the students miss out on creativity and engagement in classroom activities, they have problems with taking the responsibility for their own learning, improvement in and out of the classroom. As a consequence of this passive approach towards the learning process, the students’ academic results are often far below their capacities. Another common observation is that instead of reading, discovering, socialising with peers the students are continuously staying in virtual world far from their roots becoming members of a globalized world without any colours of a specific culture. The students do not have the necessary knowledge about the world also because they often do not find motivation in their families, do not see their parents reading books etc. Through our project and cooperation with countries of different cultures and educational systems we want to activate the students to take actions in the process of learning, enrich their knowledge about the uniqueness of cultures, teach them tolerance and respect for differences, let them acquire foreign languages, improve ICT, cooperation and entrepreneurship skills which are essential for successful functioning in the labour market. The project consists of three complementary parts in which we study the effects of geography on human beings in many aspects of their culture such as fashion, cuisine, language.
Part one :” Origins” – the students collect materials about first settlements on their lands, tribes, geographical conditions. They will try to answer questions about national characters, what they are determined by( location, terrain, access to food, living conditions, historic events, migrations etc). The students will acquire editorial skills through writing essays, publishing articles, online magazines, booklets about first settlements in their regions, and most significant historic events which might have affected national characters. The students will also conduct a research and create a map of migrations in their regions.
Part two : ” Nature and physiognomy ” – the students will study the aspect of human physiognomy and character and relate them to geography. They will create a questionnaire about attitudes of the people in their regions, analyse popular proverbs, sayings, idioms revealing the values and vices for the people in their regions. The students will also study the appearance of the people in their regions creating a photo exhibition depicting most typical psysiognomy features for their regions. They will gather samples of cloth, pictures, handmade pieces of clothing, examine how fashion and the materials evolved, what the evolution was determined by. The students will create online fashion magazine and organize a fashion show. The students will also create calendars with former and current regional fashion promoting the culture of their regions.
Part III : ” Philosophy of cuisine” – the students will collect old traditional recipes for food and drinks, healing methods , herbal remedies etc. The students will take part in workshops „Chefs of Europe”- open air cooking experience- learning to cook regional specialties, they will create online encyclopedia of natural treatment methods and a cookery book which will be translated into all the languages of cooperation.
